Every year, the united Andhra Pradesh govt. used to present Nandi awards to the Telugu feature films. However, after the bifurcation of the AP, the presentation of Nandi awards has been kept on hold, since 2011. After a lot of discussions, both the Telugu states look to have now decided to felicitate Telugu films with separate awards.
The residual AP will continue the presentation of Nandi awards whereas the Telangana govt. has reportedly decided upon establishing Simha awards as the counterparts of Nandi. The TS govt. has earlier set up a committee to finalize a name for their state film awards and the name of ‘Simha’ has reportedly been recommended by the committee.
There is no official announcement on this yet but the honorable Chief Minister of Telangana, K Chandrasekhar Rao is expected to announce the birth of ‘Simha’ awards soon. Besides, awards on the names of Telangana film legends like Kathi Kantha Rao, Paidi Jayaraj, Prabhakar Reddy, Dasarathi Krishnamacharya, Music director Chakri etc. will also be set up.
‘Simha’ as well as Nandi awards are expected to be presented to acclaimed Telugu films and the artists in March-April period, starting from 2017.
