Tyler Deron Lockett is an American professional football wide receiver who has built a distinguished career in the National Football League. Early Life and Background

Tyler Deron Lockett was born on September 28, 1992, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Nicole Edwards and Kevin Lockett. His father, Kevin Lockett, played college football at Kansas State University from 1993 to 1996 and became the school’s all-time leading receiver before his son surpassed those records. Kevin also played for four NFL teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs. Lockett’s uncle, Aaron Lockett, also played for Kansas State from 1998 to 2001 and ranks as the school’s fourth all-time leading receiver and second all-time leading punt returner. Aaron won a Grey Cup with the BC Lions in 2006. This strong football lineage provided Tyler with early exposure to the sport and mentorship from experienced family members.

Lockett attended Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, where he excelled as a three-sport star in football, basketball, and track and field. He helped lead the Hornets to Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association championships in both football and basketball. As a sophomore, he made several notable contributions to the team on its way to the school’s first football OSSAA championship in 24 years. As a junior, Lockett played most of the year with a broken wrist that had initially been diagnosed as a severe sprain. Despite the injury, he continued competing at a high level. Booker T. Washington compiled a 13-1 record and won the 2010 OSSAA 5A championship in football his senior year. In addition to football, Lockett was a top competitor in basketball, helping his team win the 2011 OSSA 5A Championship, and in track and field, where he was one of the state’s top sprinters, posting a regional title in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.85 seconds.

Regarded as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, Lockett was ranked as the number 16 player in the state of Oklahoma and the No. 170 nationally by ESPN.com. He chose Kansas State over a scholarship offer from Kansas, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle.

Path to Professional Football

Lockett received an athletic scholarship to attend Kansas State University, where he played for coach Bill Snyder’s Kansas State Wildcats football team from 2011 to 2014. Both his father Kevin and uncle Aaron played wide receiver for the Wildcats under Snyder. The Wildcats’ receivers coach Michael Smith also coached all three family members, creating a unique continuity in the program that spanned generations.

Lockett’s college career began with immediate impact. As a true freshman in 2011, he earned Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year honors despite missing the final three games of the regular season due to a lacerated kidney. Seattle Seahawks (2015–2024)

Lockett was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round (69th overall) of the 2015 NFL draft. The Seahawks traded their third-, fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-round picks to the Washington Redskins in order to move up to select Lockett. In his first NFL appearance, Lockett returned a 103-yard kickoff for a touchdown against the Denver Broncos in Seattle’s preseason opener. Four weeks later, in his NFL regular season debut, Lockett returned a 57-yard punt for a touchdown on his first career return against the St. Louis Rams. He also posted 4 receptions for 34 yards in his debut.

His remarkable start earned him recognition as NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September 2015. Lockett became the first Seahawks rookie to win the award since Joey Galloway.
