Ryne Nelson Bio
Ryne Tanner Nelson (born February 1, 1998) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball. Nelson reached the major leagues in 2022 and has worked as both a starter and a reliever for Arizona, compiling a multi-season body of work through the 2026 campaign.
Early Life and Background
Ryne Tanner Nelson grew up in Henderson, Nevada, and attended Basic High School where he developed as a two-way player. As a junior he hit over .400 and posted a 6–1 record on the mound, and in his senior season he helped Basic win a state championship while earning All-State recognition.
Unselected in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, Nelson enrolled at the University of Oregon to play for the Oregon Ducks. His college tenure included an injury-shortened freshman year, a productive sophomore season out of the bullpen, and summer play in the Cape Cod Baseball League where he was named a league All-Star.
Path to Baseball
Nelson’s role at Oregon evolved between relief work and spot starts, and he finished the 2019 collegiate season on the All-Pac-12 Team. That body of work and his Cape Cod performance established him as a high draft prospect going into 2019.
The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Nelson in the second round of the 2019 MLB draft with the 56th overall pick, signing him for a reported $1.1 million. He began his professional career that year in the short-season Northwest League as part of Arizona’s farm system.
Ryne Nelson Career
Early Career (2019–2021)
After signing in 2019, Nelson was assigned to the Hillsboro Hops of the Class A Short Season Northwest League, where he struck out 26 batters in just under 19 innings and posted a sub-3.00 ERA in limited action. The 2020 minor league season was canceled due to the global pandemic, delaying Nelson’s on-field development.
Nelson returned to action in 2021 with Hillsboro in the High-A West and earned a promotion to the Amarillo Sod Poodles at Double-A after strong early results. Across his 2021 stops he accumulated high strikeout totals and was recognized by the Diamondbacks as their Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
Triple-A and Major League Breakthrough (2022–2023)
Nelson began the 2022 season at Triple-A with the Reno Aces, where he made 26 appearances and recorded double-digit wins while compiling significant strikeout totals over the season. Arizona selected his contract and promoted him to the major leagues on September 5, 2022.
Nelson made his Major League Baseball debut that night as the Diamondbacks’ starting pitcher versus the San Diego Padres. He delivered seven scoreless innings, struck out seven batters, and issued no walks in a 5–0 Arizona victory, a performance that announced his readiness for a frontline role.
The 2023 season opened with Nelson on Arizona’s Opening Day roster. He made 24 starts that year before a midseason option to Triple-A designed to refine his approach. Nelson finished the season with an 8–8 record, a 5.31 ERA and 96 strikeouts across 144 innings pitched for Arizona.
Arizona Diamondbacks Era (2024–Present)
Nelson spent the full 2024 season in the Arizona rotation, appearing in 28 games with 25 starts and finishing 10–6 with a 4.24 ERA and 126 strikeouts in just over 150 innings. He settled into a more consistent role as a member of the club’s starting staff during that year.
In 2025 Nelson began the season in the Diamondbacks bullpen but moved back into the starting rotation after an injury to Corbin Burnes. On March 30, 2025, while Arizona was using National League rules that allowed pitchers to bat, Nelson recorded his first career plate appearance and delivered an RBI single to center, becoming the first full-time pitcher to record a hit since 2021 World Series starter Zack Greinke.
Across 2025 he appeared in 33 games, making 23 starts, and posted a 7–3 record with a 3.39 ERA and 132 strikeouts over 154 innings. Nelson opened 2026 in Arizona’s rotation but on June 19, 2026 he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a flexor muscle strain and a mild ulnar collateral sprain; he was transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 25, 2026.
Driving Style and Strengths
Nelson pairs a strikeout-oriented repertoire with the ability to work deep into games when his command is on target. Scouting and team reports during his ascent emphasize his swing-and-miss stuff, a willingness to challenge hitters, and the adaptability to shift between starting and relief roles as team needs dictate.
Notable Events and Milestones
Nelson’s Major League debut on September 5, 2022, stands as a signature moment: seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. His 2024 season marked his first full year as a primary starter, and his RBI single on March 30, 2025, drew attention as a rare offensive moment from a full-time pitcher.
