Early Life and Background
Nate Brooks was born in Tyler, Texas, and attended Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas. During his high school football career, he played quarterback, cornerback, and free safety for the Whitehouse Wildcats. His junior year was marked by four interceptions and 53 tackles, earning him first-team all-district 16-4A honors and the role of team captain. In his senior year, he received second-team all-district 16-5A honors and was named to the East Texas Football Super Team Second-Team by East Texas Sports News.
Brooks was also a two-sport athlete, playing outfielder for the Wildcats baseball team. Rated as a three-star football recruit, he received offers from Louisiana Tech and North Texas and was considered by programs such as Southern Methodist University and Minnesota. He ultimately committed to North Texas in 2014 and graduated high school in 2015.
Path to American Football
Brooks began his college football career with the North Texas Mean Green in 2015, playing in all 10 games as a cornerback and starting seven. He recorded a career-high 11 tackles in a game against UTSA and finished the season with 38 tackles. In 2016, he earned a Defensive Player of the Week honor and an All-Conference USA Honorable Mention after tallying 57 tackles.
Despite injuries in 2017, Brooks was a preseason All-Conference USA selection and started eight games. He entered his senior year stronger and healthier, weighing 185 pounds. In 2018, he started all 13 games, recording six interceptions, 67 tackles, and 10 pass break-ups, earning Second Team All-Conference USA honors and finishing as a runner-up for the Jim Thorpe Award. Early Career (2019–2020)
After going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, Nate Brooks signed with the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent. During 2019, he was also part of the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins practice squads. In 2020, Brooks joined the Baltimore Ravens practice squad and was elevated to the active roster for a Week 17 game against the Cincinnati Bengals before being released shortly after.
Journeyman Phase (2021–2022)
Brooks signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 but was waived before the season started. He then had multiple stints with the Tennessee Titans, including practice squad signings and releases. Brooks returned to the Arizona Cardinals practice squad late in 2021 and signed a reserve/future contract in early 2022 but was released in August. He briefly joined the Las Vegas Raiders in August 2022 before being waived, then rejoined the Tennessee Titans practice squad later that year.
Birmingham Stallions Era and USFL Success (2023–Present)
In December 2022, Brooks signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL. He contributed to the team’s success, becoming a USFL champion in 2023. Brooks briefly signed with the San Francisco 49ers in August 2023 but was waived later that month. He re-signed with the Birmingham Stallions in September 2023 and continues to play with them.
