Jordan Greenway grew up in Canton, New York, where he began playing hockey in the local minor hockey association. His early talent on the ice led him to Shattuck-Saint Mary’s in Minnesota for his high school hockey career, a program known for developing elite hockey players. From there, Greenway advanced to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (U.S. NTDP), playing with the Under-17 and Under-18 national teams during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons in the United States Hockey League (USHL). Jordan Greenway Career
Early Career (2015–2018)
After being drafted by the Minnesota Wild in 2015, Greenway continued his collegiate career at Boston University while awaiting his professional opportunity. On March 26, 2018, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Wild, abandoning his college career just days before the 2018 NHL Trade Deadline. Greenway made his NHL debut the following day, stepping onto the ice for the Wild in a 2-1 loss to the Nashville Predators. He then played his first career NHL playoff game in Game 1 of the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs against the Winnipeg Jets. By accomplishing this, Greenway became the first player in hockey history to play in the Olympic Games, an NCAA tournament, and the Stanley Cup playoffs within the same season. He scored his first career NHL playoff goal on April 15 in a 6-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.
Minnesota Wild Era (2018–2023)
Greenway began the 2018-19 season with the Wild but was reassigned to the American Hockey League after nine games to continue his development. Remarkably, just one day after being demoted, he recorded a hat trick in a 6-1 win over the Colorado Eagles. Following his second AHL game, the Wild recalled him to the NHL roster. On October 29, in his first game back with the team, Greenway scored his first regular-season NHL goal in a 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. On January 31, 2022, the Wild signed Greenway to a three-year, $9 million contract extension, rewarding his steady progression as a key forward piece for the franchise. During the 2022-23 season, Greenway struggled with his lowest statistical output, recording only 2 goals and 7 points through 45 regular-season games.
Buffalo Sabres Era (2023–Present)
On March 3, 2023, the Minnesota Wild traded Greenway to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for two draft picks, ending his five-plus season tenure with the organization. The trade came as Greenway was in the midst of his most challenging professional season. Joining the Sabres provided a fresh start for the power forward, who brought his 6-foot-6 frame, physical presence, and two-way capabilities to a Buffalo roster looking to build around its young core. His size makes him particularly effective along the boards, in front of the net, and in winning puck battles in tight spaces.
Playing Style and Strengths
Greenway’s 6-foot-6-inch frame stands as his most distinguishing physical attribute on the ice. His size enables him to dominate puck battles along the boards, establish positioning in front of opposing goaltenders, and use his extended reach to recover loose pucks. Greenway plays an effective two-way game, contributing in both offensive and defensive situations. His skating has improved throughout his professional career, allowing him to better utilize his frame at the NHL level. He excels in front of the net on the power play, where his presence creates screens and rebounds for his teammates.
Notable Events and Milestones
Greenway’s historic selection to the 2018 United States Olympic hockey team marked a significant milestone in hockey history, as he became the first African-American named to a US Olympic ice hockey roster. This accomplishment came just one day after he signed his entry-level contract with the Wild, making for a remarkable 48-hour period in his career. His unique achievement of playing in the Olympics, an NCAA tournament, and Stanley Cup playoffs all within the same season remains unprecedented in professional hockey.
