Early Life and Background
Elvis Merzļikins was born in Riga, Latvia, on 13 April 1994. He was named after Elvis Presley, as his father was a devoted fan of the legendary American musician. Growing up in Latvia’s capital city, Merzļikins developed his passion for hockey at a young age and began his journey toward becoming a professional goaltender. His early development in Latvia laid the foundation for what would become an impressive international career.
Merzļikins grew up multilingual, eventually speaking Latvian, English, Russian, and Italian fluently. This linguistic ability would later serve him well during his career in Switzerland, where he played for HC Lugano and became a fan favorite in the Italian-speaking region of Ticino.
Path to Professional Hockey
Before reaching the professional ranks, Merzļikins represented Latvia at both junior and senior international levels. He participated in the 2012 and 2013 World Junior Championships, gaining valuable experience at the international underage competition. At the conclusion of that season, he was recognized as the National League’s Most Improved Player and Youngster of the Year, signaling his potential as a future star in European hockey.
The 2015–16 season marked Merzļikins’ breakthrough year. He led the entire league in saves with 1,484 while ranking second in save percentage and fifth in wins, posting a 23–13–4 record in 44 appearances. His exceptional play carried into the playoffs, where he guided HC Lugano to the National League final, compiling a .937 save percentage and 2.32 goals against average over 15 playoff games. His standout performances earned him the Jacques Plante Trophy as the league’s best goaltender.

On 20 March 2019, he signed an entry-level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets and immediately joined the team for the remainder of their season, participating in their run through the 2019 NHL playoffs.
Merzļikins made his NHL debut on 5 October 2019 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. His first victory came on 31 December 2019 against the Florida Panthers, where he stopped 37 of 38 shots in a 4–1 Columbus victory. Less than two weeks later, on 11 January 2020, he recorded his first career NHL shutout in a 3–0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights. He finished his rookie season with 13 wins, 9 losses, and 8 overtime losses to go along with 5 shutouts in 33 games played. His impressive debut campaign earned him a spot on the NHL’s All-Rookie Team, making him the third Blue Jackets player to receive that honor.
On 23 April 2020, Merzļikins signed a two-year contract extension with Columbus. Merzļikins and his wife have two sons. Their first son, born in August 2021, was named Emils in honor of former teammate and countryman Matīss Kivlenieks, who tragically died in a fireworks accident on 4 July 2021. Kivlenieks saved the lives of Merzļikins and his pregnant wife during the incident. Their second son, born in March 2025, was named in memory of Johnny Gaudreau, who was killed along with his brother Matthew Gaudreau by a drunk driver while riding bicycles in August 2024.
Merzļikins has spoken publicly about the emotional challenges he has faced since the 2021 tragedy. In April 2022, he revealed that the cannon blasts used during Columbus home games triggered anxiety, as they reminded him of the fireworks accident that claimed Kivlenieks’ life.
2025 Season Performance
The 2024–25 NHL season marked a period of transition for Merzļikins and the Columbus Blue Jackets organization. After several seasons of declining statistics, the team made changes to their goaltending coaching staff, bringing in Niklas Bäckström to work specifically with Merzļikins and help him return to the form he displayed during his first two NHL seasons and his dominant years in Switzerland.
Merzļikins continued to serve as one of Columbus’s primary goaltenders, though injuries had limited his availability in previous seasons.
