Chase Edmonds is an American professional football running back for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League. He played college football for the Fordham Rams and was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft. Edmonds has also played for the Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his professional career.
Edmonds carved out a reputation as one of the most productive running backs in Football Championship Subdivision history before transitioning to the NFL. He earned consecutive FCS All-American honors and left Fordham as the fifth-leading rusher in NCAA FCS history. Early Life and Background
Chase Edmonds was born on April 13, 1996, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he grew up and attended Central Dauphin East High School. At Central Dauphin East, Edmonds played both basketball and football for the Panthers and emerged as one of the most dynamic offensive players in Pennsylvania high school football.
As a senior, Edmonds accumulated 2,378 total yards and 25 touchdowns, including 1,984 rushing yards. His performance earned him consensus All-State selection honors and an invitation to the Big 33 Football Classic, where he was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Despite his high school success, Edmonds drew little attention from Football Bowl Subdivision programs, largely because of his smaller frame.
Path to Professional Football
With limited offers from major college programs, Edmonds chose Fordham University in New York City, where he could compete at the Football Championship Subdivision level. The decision proved transformative, as Edmonds immediately established himself as a record-setting running back for the Fordham Rams.
Edmonds earned a degree in Communications from Fordham while building one of the most decorated collegiate careers in program history. He finished his college career ranked fifth in NCAA FCS history with 5,862 career rushing yards. Early Career (2018–2021)
The Arizona Cardinals selected Chase Edmonds in the fourth round, 134th overall, of the 2018 NFL draft. He signed his rookie contract on May 11, 2018, and made his NFL debut on September 9, 2018, rushing four times for 24 yards and catching four passes for 24 yards in a 24–6 loss to the Washington Redskins. Edmonds scored his first two professional touchdowns on December 2, 2018, in a 20–17 win over the Green Bay Packers, and finished his rookie season with 60 carries for 208 yards and two touchdowns.
During the 2019 season, Edmonds posted his first career 100-yard rushing game in Week 7 against the New York Giants, finishing with 126 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a 27–21 Cardinals victory. He entered the 2021 season as the Cardinals starting running back for the first time in his career, ahead of free agent signee James Conner. Edmonds started the first nine games before suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 9 and finished the 2021 season second on the team with a career-high 592 rushing yards and two touchdowns along with 43 catches for 311 yards.
Denver Broncos Era (2022)
On March 14, 2022, Edmonds signed with the Miami Dolphins on a two-year contract. Less than eight months later, on November 1, 2022, the Dolphins traded Edmonds along with a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Denver Broncos in exchange for outside linebacker Bradley Chubb and a 2025 fifth-round pick. Edmonds suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 11 and was placed on injured reserve on November 22, 2022. He was activated on December 24, 2022, and finished his time with both the Dolphins and Broncos with 68 carries for 245 rushing yards and two touchdowns to go with 16 receptions for 157 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. On March 13, 2023, the Broncos released Edmonds.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Era (2023–2024)
On March 20, 2023, Edmonds signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was placed on injured reserve on September 20, 2023, and activated on October 25, 2023. Edmonds finished the 2023 season with 49 carries for 176 rushing yards to go with 14 receptions for 81 receiving yards. On March 13, 2024, Edmonds re-signed with the Buccaneers, but he was placed on injured reserve on August 27, 2024.
Washington Commanders Era (2025)
Chase Edmonds signed with the practice squad of the Washington Commanders on September 15, 2025, and was promoted to the active roster on December 10, 2025. The move marked Edmonds’ fifth NFL team as he added depth and experience to the Commanders backfield. With the Commanders, Edmonds continued to provide reliable special teams contribution and occasional offensive touches late in the season.
