Cameron Latu (born February 24, 2000) is an American professional football tight end and fullback for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide, where he developed into a starting tight end and contributed to a national championship team. The San Francisco 49ers selected Latu in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the 101st overall pick. After spending his rookie season on injured reserve, Latu has continued his NFL career with stops in San Francisco, Cleveland, and Philadelphia.
Early Life and Background
Cameron Latu was born in Los Angeles, California to Jillene Argust and Viliami Latu. At the age of 2, his family relocated to Chisholm, Minnesota. During his childhood, Latu participated in football, basketball, and track and field. In 2013, his family moved again, this time to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he would attend high school and develop as a football player.
Latu attended Olympus High School in Holladay, Utah. As a junior, he recorded 65 tackles with 20 tackles for loss and nine sacks on defense while also catching 14 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns on offense, helping lead Olympus High to an 8-3 record and a playoff berth. He originally committed to play at Brigham Young University along with his identical twin brother but reopened his commitment after a senior season that saw him post 45 tackles with 8 tackles for loss and 3 sacks on defense and 10 catches for 168 yards and 1 touchdown on offense.
Path to American Football
Latu committed to play college football at the University of Alabama over offers from Nebraska, USC, Utah, and 19 other schools. His decision to join the Crimson Tide program marked his entry into one of college football’s most prestigious programs. In 2018, Latu redshirted his true freshman season at Alabama after playing in just two games and recording one tackle in his college debut against Louisville. San Francisco 49ers (2023-2024)
Latu was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round, 101st overall, of the 2023 NFL Draft. The 49ers placed him on injured reserve on August 29, 2023, effectively ending his first NFL season before it could truly begin.
