Rasmus Sandin Bio
Carl Erik Rasmus Sandin is a Swedish professional ice hockey defenceman for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected in the first round, 29th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2018 NHL entry draft. Before joining the NHL, Sandin played five games for Rögle BK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). Known for his strong skating and hockey sense, Sandin has developed into a reliable two-way defenceman at the NHL level.
Early Life and Background
Sandin was born on 7 March 2000 in Uppsala, Sweden to Helena and Patric Sandin. He grew up alongside his older brother Linus, who also pursued a professional hockey career. From an early age, Sandin demonstrated a strong aptitude for the sport, eventually choosing to study English in school rather than Spanish or German, reflecting his focus on international opportunities in hockey.
At age 15, Sandin signed with the Modo Hockey organisation and spent the 2016–17 season with Brynäs IF in the J20 Nationell junior league. He recorded three goals and 15 assists through 18 games, catching the attention of North American scouts and setting the stage for his eventual path to the NHL.
Path to Hockey
Following his impressive season with Brynäs IF, Sandin was drafted in the first round of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Despite the selection, he initially chose to remain in Sweden and begin his professional career with Rögle BK of the Swedish Hockey League. He recorded one assist through his first five SHL games before using an out-clause to join the Greyhounds for the 2017–18 season, seeking more ice time and a higher profile to improve his NHL draft ranking.
Upon joining the Greyhounds, Sandin was paired with Conor Timmins and quickly established himself as one of the team’s top defensemen. He made his OHL debut on 28 October 2017 and scored his first league goal in his third game, lifting the Greyhounds to a 5–4 overtime victory against the Sudbury Wolves. The team went on to set a franchise record with 23 consecutive wins during the season.

Sandin finished the 2017–18 regular season leading all rookie defensemen with 12 goals and 33 assists for 45 points. His outstanding performance earned him the Greyhounds Rookie of the Year award, a finalist nomination for the Emms Family Award, and a spot on the 2017–18 OHL All-Rookie First Team. He was also selected to participate in the 2018 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.
Following his rookie OHL campaign, Sandin attended the NHL combine as a top prospect and interviewed with 27 NHL teams. The NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked him 11th among all North American skaters. On 23 June 2018, Sandin was selected in the first round, 29th overall, by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs on 16 July 2018.
Toronto Maple Leafs Era (2018–2023)
After attending the Maple Leafs’ 2018 training camp, Sandin was assigned to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. He suffered a thumb injury before making his AHL debut but recovered and scored his first AHL goal on 26 October against the Syracuse Crunch. At age 18, Sandin became the youngest player on any AHL roster. He continued his strong play, recording 28 points through 44 games and adding 10 points in 13 playoff games as the Marlies reached the Eastern Conference final.
Sandin made his NHL debut on 2 October 2019 against the Ottawa Senators, recording his first point—an assist—in the game. He became the first 19-year-old defenceman to play for the Maple Leafs since Morgan Rielly in 2013. After appearing in six NHL games, he was reassigned to the Marlies where he continued to develop. He joined Team Sweden for the 2020 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and was later recalled to the NHL in January 2020.
Sandin scored his first NHL goal on 27 January 2020 in a 5–2 victory over the Nashville Predators. When the NHL season was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March, he had recorded one goal and eight points through 28 games. He joined the Maple Leafs for the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs but did not appear in any games during their series against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
During the shortened 2021–22 season, Sandin was assigned to the Leafs’ taxi squad before being loaned to the Marlies for playing time. He suffered a foot injury blocking a shot but recovered and was recalled to the NHL as a replacement for injured players. Sandin made his Stanley Cup playoffs debut in Game 1 against the Montreal Canadiens in 2021 and scored his first playoff goal in Game 2 of that series.
Washington Capitals Era (2023–Present)
On 28 February 2023, Sandin was traded to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Erik Gustafsson and a 2023 first-round draft pick. Due to visa issues, he was unable to immediately join the team but was cleared to play on 4 March. In his Capitals debut, Sandin became the first defenseman in franchise history to score three points in his team debut, recording eight points through his first four games including three multi-point performances.
Sandin finished the 2022–23 regular season with a career-high seven goals and 28 assists through 71 games, ranking second on the team in time on ice per game. When the Capitals failed to qualify for the playoffs, he represented Team Sweden at the 2023 IIHF World Championship.
He signed a five-year, $23 million contract extension with the Capitals as a restricted free agent on 6 March 2024. Though he suffered an upper-body injury in April that ended his regular season, Sandin set new career-highs with 20 assists and 23 points. He debuted in Game 4 of the Capitals’ first-round playoff series against the New York Rangers.
Playing Style and Strengths
Sandin is known as a mobile, two-way defenceman with strong skating ability and excellent hockey sense. His left-handed shot and quick transition game allow him to contribute effectively in both ends of the ice. He has shown the ability to log significant minutes and handle pressure situations, demonstrated by his increased ice time with the Capitals when veteran John Carlson was injured.

Several milestones stand out in Sandin’s young career: his record-setting rookie season with the Greyhounds, becoming the youngest player on any AHL roster at age 18, scoring his first NHL goal against the Nashville Predators in January 2020, and his historic three-point debut with the Capitals. His selection to Team Sweden for multiple international tournaments, including the 2019 and 2020 World Junior Championships, further underscores his status as a top Swedish defenceman.
