John Joseph Louis Johnson III is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman who played 19 seasons in the National Hockey League. A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, Johnson was regarded as a two-way defenseman, combining physical prowess with offensive capability. He played for six NHL franchises before retiring in 2026 and joining the Vancouver Canucks as a professional scout.
Early Life and Background
Johnson was born on January 13, 1987, in Indianapolis, Indiana. His family relocated to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, shortly after his birth. Growing up in Michigan, Johnson played minor hockey for Little Caesar’s before transferring to Shattuck-Saint Mary’s Boarding School in Faribault, Minnesota, before his eighth-grade year. At Shattuck-Saint Mary’s, Johnson developed into a highly touted prospect, scoring 15 goals and 27 assists during his sophomore season in 2002-03, helping the school’s Midget Major AAA team capture the United States National Championship alongside future NHL star Sidney Crosby.
