Taijuan Emmanuel Walker is an American professional baseball pitcher who has played in Major League Baseball for the Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies. He made his MLB debut in 2013 and earned All-Star honors in 2021. Walker has represented Mexico internationally, including at the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Early Life and Background
Taijuan Emmanuel Walker was born on August 13, 1992, in Shreveport, Louisiana. His father is Black and his mother is half-Mexican and half-White. Raised by his single mother, Walker helped care for his younger siblings. His original passion was basketball, and he did not begin playing baseball until the age of 11.
Walker attended Yucaipa High School in Yucaipa, California. At Yucaipa, he played both pitcher and shortstop while competing as a two-sport athlete. Hisathletic abilities and arm strength quickly drew attention from professional scouts.
Path to Professional Baseball
The Seattle Mariners selected Walker in the first round of the 2010 MLB Draft with the 43rd overall pick. He signed with the team for an $800,000 signing bonus. He made four appearances for the rookie-level Arizona League Mariners, all in relief, posting a 1-1 record with a 1.29 earned run average.
Walker rapidly climbed the Mariners minor league system. He entered the 2011 season ranked as the fourth-best prospect in Seattle’s organization according to Baseball America. He started three games that September, finishing with a 3.60 ERA in 15 innings of work. On September 24, 2014, he pitched his first MLB complete game, losing 1-0 to the Toronto Blue Jays.
The 2015 season proved to be a breakthrough year. Walker won five consecutive starts in June and July, improving his record from 2-6 to 7-6. On November 23, 2016, the Mariners traded Walker to the Arizona Diamondbacks as part of a three-team deal. In his first season in Arizona, he made 28 starts and posted a 9-9 record in 157 innings. On April 15, 2018, he was placed on the disabled list with right forearm tightness. Further testing revealed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, requiring Tommy John surgery that ended his season. He returned to make one appearance in the final game of the 2019 season. Arizona non-tendered Walker in December 2019, making him a free agent.
Toronto Blue Jays (2020)
Walker signed a one-year, $2 million contract to return to the Seattle Mariners on February 12, 2020. He was 2-2 with a 4.00 ERA in five starts before the Mariners traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays on August 27. With Toronto, he appeared in six games and compiled a 2-1 record with a 1.37 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 26 and one-third innings pitched.
New York Mets (2021–2022)
On February 20, 2021, Walker signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the New York Mets. He was named to the MLB All-Star Game that season, replacing teammate Jacob deGrom. He did not pitch during the postseason. In 2024, Walker began the season on the injured list due to right shoulder impingement and joined the starting rotation in late April. He was placed on the injured list again in June with right index finger inflammation. Upon returning in August, he continued to struggle and was moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen on August 29, finishing 3-7 with a 7.10 ERA in 19 games. In 2025, Walker recorded his first career save on May 7 against the Tampa Bay Rays, striking out seven over three innings of relief. He returned to the rotation in July and finished the season 5-8 with 86 strikeouts in 123 and two-thirds innings.
