Bryce Miller Bio
Bryce Austen Miller (born August 23, 1998) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball. Miller made his MLB debut in 2023 and established himself early as a high-strikeout starter for the Mariners.
Early Life and Background
Bryce Miller attended New Braunfels High School in New Braunfels, Texas, where he played for the New Braunfels Unicorns and graduated in the class of 2017. He grew up in the same neighborhood as teammate Jordan Westburg and the two were childhood friends who shared the field in high school competition.
After high school Miller began his college baseball career at Blinn College, where he worked as a relief pitcher and produced a 7–1 record with five saves in 20 relief appearances in 2018. He later transferred to Texas A&M University to continue his development with the Texas A&M Aggies baseball program, pitching for three seasons and converting from a reliever into a starting pitcher by 2021.
Path to Baseball
Miller gained additional experience in summer collegiate leagues, appearing for the Brazos Valley Bombers of the Texas Collegiate League in 2018 and 2020 and for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2019. Those stints against quality collegiate competition helped prepare him for the professional ranks by sharpening his durability and strikeout profile.
The Miami Marlins selected Miller in the 38th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft, but he did not sign and instead continued at Texas A&M. The Seattle Mariners then selected him in the fourth round, with the 113th overall pick, of the 2021 MLB draft; he signed for a reported $400,000 bonus and began his professional career in the Mariners system.
Bryce Miller Career
Early Career (2021–2022)
Miller made his professional debut with the Single-A Modesto Nuts in 2021, pitching 9 1/3 innings across five appearances and showing early signs of the strikeout ability that would define his game. He spent the 2022 season moving through three levels of the Mariners’ minor-league system, appearing for Modesto, the High-A Everett AquaSox, and the Double-A Arkansas Travelers.
Across those stops in 2022 Miller combined for a 7–4 record and a 3.16 earned run average while accumulating 163 strikeouts in 133 2/3 innings. That season established him as one of the Mariners’ notable pitching prospects and set the stage for a major-league opportunity in 2023.
MLB Breakthrough (2023)
The Seattle Mariners promoted Miller to the major leagues for the first time on May 1, 2023, giving him a start against the Oakland Athletics. In his MLB debut Miller took a perfect game into the sixth inning before surrendering a one-out single; he finished six innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out 10 batters, setting a Mariners record for most strikeouts in a major-league debut.
His first month in the majors featured historic efficiency and control. In his first three starts Miller allowed only eight baserunners, breaking a record that dated back to 1901 for the fewest baserunners through a pitcher’s first three starts with a minimum of 15 innings. He also posted a record-low WHIP for a pitcher’s first three starts in MLB history with the same innings threshold and became the first pitcher since 1901 to pitch at least six innings while allowing four or fewer hits in each of his first five career appearances.
Miller experienced a midseason setback when he landed on the injured list on July 3, 2023, with a blister on his finger, but he returned to make additional starts later that month. He finished his rookie season with an 8–7 record, a 4.32 ERA, and 119 strikeouts in 131 1/3 innings as opposing teams adjusted and he collected valuable big-league innings.
2024 Season Performance (2024)
Miller put up an impressive second major-league season in 2024, compiling a 12–8 record with a 2.98 ERA and 171 strikeouts in 180 1/3 innings. His 2.98 ERA ranked among the top ERAs in the league, and his 1.068 walks plus hits per inning pitched ranked fourth in the majors, reflecting improved control and consistency across a full season workload.
Durability and the ability to work deep into games became a feature of Miller’s 2024 season: seven times he pitched at least seven innings while allowing zero or one run. Those extended outings helped stabilize the Mariners’ rotation and established Miller as a dependable midrotation starter capable of handling a starter’s workload on a regular basis.
Seattle Mariners Era (2023–Present)
Miller has worn the Seattle Mariners uniform since his promotion in 2023 and is listed with jersey number 50. His development with the Mariners has been marked by rapid adaptation to major-league hitters, an expansion of his pitch selection and stamina, and a series of record-setting early performances that drew attention around the league.
Through the end of the 2024 season Miller had shown the capacity to be a frontline starter for the Mariners, combining swing-and-miss ability with improved command and the physical durability to log high innings totals. The organization has continued to rely on him as part of its starting rotation while he builds experience against top-level competition.
Pitching Style and Strengths
Miller’s early major-league profile centers on his strikeout ability, control and the capacity to go deep into games. His low WHIP and high strikeout totals across his first two seasons indicate effective command and a propensity to miss bats, while multiple seven-inning outings in 2024 highlight his stamina and ability to limit opponent runs over extended outings.
Notable Events and Milestones
Notable milestones in Miller’s early major-league career include a Mariners franchise record for most strikeouts in an MLB debut, multiple MLB-record marks for baserunners and WHIP across his first three starts, and the achievement of pitching at least six innings while allowing four or fewer hits in each of his first five career appearances. He also overcame a midseason blister in 2023 to return to the rotation that same month.
Bryce Miller Career Wins
By the end of the 2024 season Miller had accumulated 20 major-league wins, combining an 8–7 rookie campaign in 2023 with a 12–8 record in 2024. Those totals reflect steady progress from a prospect in the minors to a reliable option in the Mariners’ rotation.
MLB Highlights
Miller’s first notable MLB highlight was his debut start on May 1, 2023, when he struck out 10 batters over six innings and set a franchise record for strikeouts in a debut. His 2024 campaign stands out for sustained performance: a sub-3.00 ERA, top-10 league ERA placement, and a top-four WHIP ranking across the majors.
Other Wins & Perfromances
At the minor-league level Miller posted a combined 7–4 record and a 3.16 ERA in 2022 while striking out 163 batters in 133 2/3 innings across three levels. His professional debut season and subsequent development in Double-A provided the platform for his rapid ascension to the major leagues.
