Cristian Javier Bio

Cristian Javier (born March 26, 1997) is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). Javier signed with the Astros as an international free agent on March 18, 2015, and made his MLB debut on July 25, 2020. During the Astros’ World Series championship season in 2022, Javier became the first player in MLB history to start two combined no-hitters in the same postseason, including Game 4 of the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. He signed a five-year, $64 million contract extension with the Astros in February 2023.

Early Life and Background

Cristian Javier was born on March 26, 1997, in the Dominican Republic. His parents are Trinidad Mieses and Cecilio Javier. Javier began pitching at age 16. When he initially auditioned for the Houston Astros, he had a maximum velocity of 86 miles per hour. Although his velocity was considered low at the time, his fastball generated notable whiff from batters, and he threw with excellent command and control.

Scout Román Ocumarez evaluated Javier during subsequent workouts, where his velocity increased with each session. When Javier reached 89 miles per hour, Ocumarez reportedly said, “if you touch 90, we’re going to sign you.” Javier achieved that velocity milestone in his next workout, leading to his signing with the Astros as an international free agent. His first professional contract was reported to be worth $10,000.

Path to Professional Baseball

Javier spent his first professional season in 2015 with the Dominican Summer League Astros, posting a 4–0 record with a 2.13 ERA over 42 and one-third innings. In 2016, he played with the Gulf Coast Astros and Greeneville Astros, compiling a 4–2 record with a 2.29 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 51 innings.

He advanced through the minor leagues in 2017 with Tri-City ValleyCats, Quad Cities River Bandits, and Buies Creek Astros, going 3–0 with a 2.25 ERA in 14 games. In 2018 with Quad Cities and Buies Creek, Javier went 7–6 with a 2.70 ERA and 146 strikeouts over 110 innings. The 2019 season saw him promoted from the Fayetteville Woodpeckers to the Corpus Christi Hooks on May 15 and then to the Round Rock Express on August 23.

Over 26 games with those three clubs in 2019, Javier went 8–3 with a 1.74 ERA, striking out 170 batters over 113 and two-thirds innings. Following that breakthrough season, the Astros added him to their 40-man roster.

Cristian Javier Career

Houston Astros (2020–Present)

Javier made his MLB debut on July 25, 2020, pitching one scoreless inning against the Seattle Mariners. He made his first career start four days later versus the Los Angeles Dodgers and earned his first MLB win on August 4, 2020. In his rookie season, Javier went 5–2 with a 3.48 ERA in 54 and one-third innings over 12 games.

He made his postseason debut against the Minnesota Twins in the American League Wild Card Series, earning his first playoff win. Javier finished third in voting for the American League Rookie of the Year award. On April 22, 2021, he became the first Astros pitcher to record the first eight outs of a game by strikeout since Jim Deshaies in 1986. He finished the 2021 season 4–1 with a 3.55 ERA, setting career highs of 36 games pitched, 101 and one-third innings, and 130 strikeouts.

In 2022, Javier began the season with eight and one-third scoreless innings in relief before becoming the Astros’ sixth starter. He earned his first career pickoff on October 1, throwing out Taylor Walls of the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth inning. Javier concluded the regular season with a 2.54 ERA and 11–9 record over 30 appearances, 25 starts, striking out 194 batters in 148 and two-thirds innings. His 194 strikeouts ranked seventh in the American League and tied with Framber Valdez for the team lead.

2022 Postseason and World Series

Javier delivered a historic postseason performance. On June 25, 2022, he threw the first seven innings of a combined no-hitter against the New York Yankees, collecting 13 strikeouts to establish a new career-best. In his next start on July 1 against the Los Angeles Angels, Javier recorded 14 strikeouts over seven innings, giving up just one hit. With 27 strikeouts over his last two starts with only one hit allowed, he set a Major League Baseball record.

In Game 3 of the American League Championship Series at Yankee Stadium, Javier pitched five and one-third scoreless innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out five. He held the Yankees hitless for another three and one-third innings, extending his total consecutive no-hit innings against them to 10 and one-third.

In Game 4 of the 2022 World Series at Citizens Bank Park, Javier delivered the first six innings of a combined no-hitter in a 5–0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero, and Ryan Pressly each followed with one inning to complete the no-hitter. This made Javier the first pitcher in major league history to start two combined no-hitters in the same postseason. The Astros defeated the Phillies in six games to secure Javier’s first World Series championship. His father, Cecilio Javier, saw him pitch in the majors for the first time during that historic Game 4 performance.

On February 10, 2023, the Astros signed Javier to a five-year, $64 million contract extension through the 2027 season. In the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Javier debuted for the Dominican Republic on March 13, pitching four scoreless innings in a 6–1 victory over Nicaragua.

Javier made seven starts in 2024 before undergoing Tommy John surgery on June 5, which ended his season prematurely. He finished with a 3–1 record and 3.89 ERA with 27 strikeouts across 34 and two-thirds innings. He returned from surgery on August 11, 2025, making his comeback start that day.

The first came on June 25, 2022, against the New York Yankees, where he pitched seven innings with 13 strikeouts. The second occurred in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series versus the Philadelphia Phillies, where he threw six innings.
