Nicholas Alexander Castellanos is an American professional baseball right fielder and third baseman who is a free agent. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Diego Padres. Castellanos was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the 2010 MLB draft and made his MLB debut on September 1, 2013. A two-time All-Star, he won the Silver Slugger Award in 2021 and led the American League in triples during the 2017 season. Castellanos signed a five-year, $100 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2022 before being released in February 2026.
Early Life and Background
Castellanos was born on March 4, 1992, in South Florida, Florida. He was raised by his parents, Michelle and Jorge Castellanos, and is of Cuban descent through his father. His mother’s family is based in Michigan. Castellanos played little league baseball in Davie, Florida, before attending the American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida. American Heritage won the Florida state championship during his sophomore year. He then transferred to Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, Florida, before his junior year.
During his senior season at Archbishop McCarthy, Castellanos earned Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the state of Florida after finishing with a .542 batting average, 34 runs scored, 41 runs batted in, and 22 stolen bases while leading his team to the Class 4A state championship. In the 2009 Under Armour All-America Baseball Game at Wrigley Field, he scored three runs, hit four doubles, drove in three runs, and won Most Valuable Player honors. The Sun-Sentinel named him the Class 6A-5A-4A Player of the Year. Castellanos committed to play college baseball for the University of Miami on a scholarship before being drafted.
He also played for the United States national baseball team for individuals 18 years of age and under during the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships. Path to MLB
The Detroit Tigers selected Castellanos in the first round, with the 44th overall pick, in the 2010 MLB Draft. He was rated by Baseball America as the third-best power-hitting prospect and 14th best overall prospect prior to the draft. He slipped in the draft because of his commitment to the University of Miami. Castellanos signed with the Tigers, receiving a $3.45 million signing bonus, the highest bonus ever given to a player taken after the first round at that time.
Though Castellanos played shortstop in high school, the Tigers shifted him to third base as a professional. Detroit Tigers (2013–2019)
Castellanos began taking outfield practice during the 2012 season as the Tigers considered him blocked at third base by Miguel Cabrera and at first base by Prince Fielder. With Castellanos now playing left field on a full-time basis, the Tigers optioned him to the Toledo Mud Hens of the Triple-A International League at the start of the 2013 season. In 134 games for the Mud Hens, he batted .276 with 18 home runs and 76 RBIs, appearing in the Triple-A All-Star Game and being named to the International League’s post-season All-Star team.
When major league rosters expanded on September 1, 2013, Castellanos was promoted to the Tigers and made his major league debut that day.
