Patrick Bailey Early Life and Background

Patrick Bailey was born on May 29, 1999, to Steve and Celeste Bailey in Greensboro, North Carolina. He attended Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, North Carolina, where he played catcher for the school’s baseball team. Bailey was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 37th round of the 2017 MLB draft, but he chose not to sign and instead honored his commitment to play college baseball at North Carolina State University. His decision to attend NC State set the foundation for his development as one of the top catching prospects in college baseball.

Path to Professional Baseball

Bailey’s time at North Carolina State University established him as one of the top catching prospects in the country. As a freshman in 2018, he slashing .321 with 13 home runs and 40 runs batted in, setting an NC State freshman record for home runs. He earned ACC Freshman of the Year honors and was named a Freshman All-American by multiple organizations including D1Baseball, NCBWA, Perfect Game, and Collegiate Baseball.

During the summer of 2018, Bailey played for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League, one of the premier summer collegiate baseball leagues. He also represented the United States collegiate national team. His sophomore season in 2019 saw him bat .288 with 10 home runs while posting a .989 fielding percentage, earning him All-ACC First Team honors and making him a semifinalist for the Buster Posey Award as the nation’s best catcher.

As a junior in 2020, Bailey hit .296 with six home runs and 20 runs batted in over just 17 games before the college baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His performance made him a top prospect for the 2020 MLB draft.

Patrick Bailey Career

Minor League Development (2020–2023)

Bailey was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 MLB draft. He signed for a signing bonus of $3.8 million. He did not play a minor league game in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, Bailey made his professional debut with the Eugene Emeralds of the High-A West. After struggling with a .185 batting average over 33 games, he was demoted to the Arizona League Giants and then reassigned to the San Jose Giants of the Low-A West. Later that month, he recorded the fastest pop time (1.71 seconds) to second base by a Giants catcher under Statcast tracking, and he held each of the top 14 pop times on that list for the season.
