Donovan Vernell Mitchell Jr. was born on September 7, 1996, in Elmsford, New York, to parents Donovan Sr. and Nicole Mitchell. His mother, who is of Panamanian and African American descent, worked as a teacher, while his father was a former Minor League Baseball player who later became the director of player relations for the New York Mets. Seeking better basketball opportunities, his mother transferred him to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, for his junior and senior years.
