Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said Kyle McCord’s strong preseason made the quarterback difficult to keep on the practice squad, explaining the decision to trade him to the Miami Dolphins, according to Heavy.
Gutekunst said Green Bay considered carrying three quarterbacks but judged that trade interest reduced the chance of retaining McCord through the practice squad. He described the move as difficult because the team valued McCord’s potential, while noting that he was unlikely to be its second-choice quarterback.
Heavy reported that McCord was expected to back up Malik Willis in Miami despite having only two weeks to learn the offense. Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan acknowledged that the timing was imperfect but expressed confidence in coaches Bobby Slowik and Bush Hamdan to prepare him.
The report also cited Dolphins Wire’s Mike Masala, who recorded McCord’s preseason totals as 446 passing yards, four touchdowns and a 65.7% completion rate.
